File Checksum
MD5 & SHA checksums of any file, with compare.
About the File Checksum
Compute MD5 and SHA-1/256/512 checksums of any file entirely in your browser and compare them against an expected value. The standard way to verify a download was not corrupted or tampered with โ the file is read locally and never uploaded.
How to use the File Checksum
- Drop any file into the zone; hashing starts immediately.
- Wait a moment โ MD5 and the SHA variants appear as they are computed.
- Paste a known hash into the compare field to confirm the file matches.
- A green note means the hash matches; red means the file differs or is corrupted.
File Checksum FAQ
Which hash should I use to verify a download?
SHA-256 is the current standard and what most project pages publish. MD5 and SHA-1 are shown for compatibility with older checksum lists but should not be trusted for security on their own.
How large a file can I hash?
The file is read into memory, so the practical limit is a few hundred megabytes depending on your device. Bigger files may fail with an out-of-memory message.
Is hashing done locally?
Yes โ MD5 runs through js-md5 and the SHA family through the browserโs Web Crypto API. The fileโs contents never leave your machine.
