Translate text to/from NATO phonetic code words.

Spoken form
โ€”
Decoded text
โ€”

The ITU/NATO phonetic alphabet used in aviation, military and support calls (โ€œB as in Bravoโ€).

About the NATO Alphabet

Spell any text with the NATO phonetic alphabet used by aviation and support lines โ€” B becomes Bravo, 9 becomes Nine โ€” and convert spoken NATO words back into text. Spaces in the input are marked as (space) in the spoken output, and digits are translated alongside letters.

How to use the NATO Alphabet

  1. Type your word or code in the Text โ†’ NATO field.
  2. Read the Spoken form line, for example Sierra - Oscar - Sierra for SOS.
  3. To reverse, paste NATO words separated by spaces or dashes into the lower editor.
  4. Copy either output box as needed.

NATO Alphabet FAQ

Which alphabet version is used?

The ITU/NATO spelling โ€” Alfa, Bravo, Charlie through Zulu โ€” with digits Zero through Nine, the standard for aviation, military and call-center spelling.

Does the decoder tolerate punctuation?

Yes. Words separated by spaces, dashes or punctuation are all recognized, and single letters typed in the spoken field pass through as themselves.

Why does a space show as (space)?

Word boundaries are significant when dictating, so each space in your input is called out explicitly in the spoken form to avoid run-together transcriptions.
